Liability and contracts
When does a business need a special event endorsement? An endorsement extending liability coverage to a one off event that falls outside your normal day to day operations.
Liability policies are priced around what you normally do. A brewery is rated as a brewery, a restaurant as a restaurant. The moment you sell tickets, bring in a third party performer, rent equipment you do not normally use, or open the space to a crowd that is there for something other than your usual business, you have created an exposure the underwriter never saw. A special event endorsement is how that gets put back on the paper.
Without it, the argument at claim time is predictable and uncomfortable. The carrier looks at a ticketed, promoted, third party production and asks whether it was within the scope of regular operations. That is not a fight you want to be having while somebody is filing an injury claim.
The endorsement rarely travels alone. Events usually also need certificates of insurance from every vendor, additional insured status in your favor, primary and non contributory language, and a waiver of subrogation. The paperwork feels excessive right up until one vendor's mistake becomes your claim.
