Fresh off the collision of MJBizCon and AWS re:Invent in Las Vegas, Jessica unwraps a Christmas claim from the cannabis world that has everything: a boutique edibles maker, a holiday promotion running too hot, and an operations decision that starts with the four worst words in manufacturing: "we can speed this up."
At 1:17 in the morning, three days before Christmas, a skeleton crew is finishing a limited edition infused caramel. Someone decides the cooling process is taking too long and turns up the temperature on the mixer. Cannabis oil, sugar, pressure, and holiday stress do the rest. The batch detonates, two mixing tanks shatter, the sprinklers fire, 400,000 unfinished goods melt, and the facility next door reports contamination from airborne candy vapor. Merry Christmas, HR.
The insurance aftermath was uglier than the explosion. Property coverage tangled with undisclosed equipment upgrades and exceeded temperature thresholds. Product losses paid only partially because production volume had been under-reported to keep premiums down. Business interruption was denied outright because the incident came from employee action outside written procedures. And the neighbor's claims were not covered at all, because building-to-building liability was assumed rather than arranged.
Then Jessica rebuilds the program the way it should have looked: correct equipment schedules, products and pollution coverage, contamination and recall protection, business interruption tied to equipment breakdown, and neighboring premises liability. In her version the explosion still happens, but the claim pays cleanly and the brand survives to launch the non-exploding 2.0. Insurance does not stop explosions. It stops explosions from ending your business.
